The Second Law of Thermodynamics
And Trump and Entropy

In all the years in college, graduate school, and post-graduate school, I have never taken a physics class and only a 10-hour geology class during my freshman year at Muskingum College. However, I possess a strange phenomenon, which I call my hauntings. When I can’t grasp something, I am haunted until I can somehow resolve some vexing issue or question. In my 76 years during my journey down the yellow brick road of my life, I’ve been haunted many, many times.

Here is such a haunting. What’s with Donald J. Trump, aka Donald the Dumb? Beyond merely his childish narcissism, why does any sentient life form in America follow him?

Wait a moment. I am getting the cart in front of the horse. Let’s start at the beginning…as in the Big Bang, which occurred 13.7 billion years ago. I am 76 years old, and that doesn’t seem as long ago as it might to readers who are younger.

The Big Bang started with something smaller than an atom, which exploded…hence, the Big Bang. That extremely small particle contained everything that we have in the universe today. All of the universe was crunched inside of that dot and was extremely hot.

Bang

One other item, which we need to discuss is the second law of thermodynamics, which is that everything tends to move from order, predictability, and structure to precisely the opposite. Everything moves in the direction of disorder, randomness, chaos, and general helter-skelter.

Campbell’s physics class: order, disorder, chaos.

Having said that, there were times, in the past 13.7 billion years, when there were moments when the second law of thermodynamics was trumped.

Some 380,000 years after the Big Bang, hydrogen and helium formed into atoms. Thus began the evolution of the universe, which started with vast clouds of hydrogen and helium. These clouds began to morph together and by 200 million years after the Big Bang, billions of stars were created. Over time, our solar system evolved.

Then single-celled micro-organisms evolved on Earth. However, when the right temperatures and conditions occurred on Earth, we experienced a Goldilocks or a threshold moment. The temperature of the cereal on Earth morphed, over time, into a long food chain with dinosaurs at the top. Dinosaurs evolved 245 million years ago and ruled the land, the air, and the sea. They were the masters of the Earth until a chance event ended their dominance. An asteroid crashed into the Earth 65 million years ago in the Yucatan Peninsula at the southern part of the Gulf of Mexico.

While that cataclysmic event killed off all dinosaurs, the mammals were able to begin having their heyday. In the last 200,000 years, homo sapiens evolved. What is unique about humans is that we have obtained a threshold unlike any other creature that has come before us. While we have a brain and can communicate with each other, we possess a collective memory or learning. What we learned isn’t lost to the generation when we learned something. It can be passed onto the next generation…ad infinitum.

This transfer of ideas over generations resulted in farming and the beginning of humans staying in a particular place. Prior to that, humans merely immigrated while hunting for animals and/or other foods where they might find it. This was an excellent exception to the second law of entropy.

After time, humans experienced another exception to the second law of thermodynamics, the Industrial Revolution. Now, we need to be careful, which we aren’t, about destroying our world like what happened with the extinction of the dinosaurs. We are acting like the huge asteroid, which wiped out the dinosaurs. In large part, this is due to our burning fossil fuels and causing global warming.

Enter Donald J. Trump. Our fake president will go down in history as the President of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. He is the personification of chaos theory. While people in psychiatry who explain his behavior as immature and childish narcissism, nonetheless, simply stating the obvious doesn’t change his psych disorder or what he is doing.

I think that I am in trouble.

This is where we need to enter the picture. This is our Goldilocks moment. Our threshold moment started with the Mueller investigation and has expanded logically and orderly. Nevertheless, there are other Goldilocks moments, which occurred when the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, US Attorney for District of Columbia, and the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia acted. The recent election moved toward order to the House of Representatives as opposed to the entropy in the Senate.

Do you see the pattern? If we don’t want to live in the chaos and disorder of entropy, we need to trump the second law of thermodynamics. If you have a child misbehaving, you have two choices: either leave the child to behave with childlike entropy or you can create Goldilocks moments where there is some order imposed upon chaos.

That being said, the first thing that we need to do is to create our own Goldilocks moment. We need to put order into the chaos in our lives. Then we need to expand it to Donald the Dumb. We need to get honest and then act. We need to support the process of removing him from being our infantile and narcissistic president. That will be truly a Goldilocks moment for all of us. Then we need to intentionally live the rest of our lives trying to lessen the chaos that we find around us by reaching out and helping others.
