Flag of Ukraine

Ukraine is in the process of attempting to discover who they are without being forced to do what outsiders wish. In other words, they are fighting for independence. The conservatives in Ukraine wish to go back to the way things were during the time of the USSR. Ukraine got its independence on December 26, 1991, which was a long awaited Christmas present of freedom from the USSR.

However, President Putin wants to recapture control over Ukraine in spite of the vast majority of the population are Ukrainians. Ukraine consists of 77.8% ethnic Ukrainians and 17.3% ethnic Russians. Most of the ethnic Ukrainians live in the western and central parts of the country, and the ethnic Russians live in the eastern section. Only three provinces have a majority of Russians.

The Ukrainian National Anthem begins with these very apt words:

Ukraine has not yet perished, nor her glory, nor her freedom,
Upon us, fellow Ukrainians, fate shall smile once more.
Our enemies will vanish like dew in the sun,
And we too shall rule, brothers, in a free land of our own.
