Increasing Communication

Course Description:
Addresses effective communication in the classroom. It includes verbal and non-verbal messages, one-on-one, small group, and large group facilitation. Content of the course addresses communication skills in both on site and online teaching.
At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Improve listening skills
2. Increase assertion skills
3. Develop skills in prevention and management of conflict
4. Avoid barriers to communication
Course Requirements:
1. Assigned readings from the textbook
2. Weekly papers on a discussion topic
3. Participation in weekly discussion
4. A final reflection paper
Required textbook:
Bolton, R. (1979). People skills: How to assert yourself, listen to others, and resolve conflicts. New York: Simon & Schuster.

Week 1—January 31 Unit 1 of People Skills pages 1-26
Week 2—February 7 Unit 2 of People Skills pages 27-113
Week 3—February 14 Unit 3 of People Skills pages 115-202
Week 4—February 21 Unit 4 of People Skills pages 203-279
Week 5—February 28 Wrap-up and Reflections (5-page paper due 3/5)
Grading:
Completing all readings, discussions, and assignments as described in the Road-Map and Syllabus at least at an 80% level will result in a passing grade.
Participate in weekly discussions—(posting one response to my weekly assignments and a minimum of four substantive responses to your fellow seminar members) |
