Course Description:

This course explores psychological factors that underlie human behavior in organizational settings.  Principles relating to communication, motivation, interpersonal relations, leadership, attitudes and other workplace issues are investigated.  Interpersonal and group relationships are analyzed through role-playing exercises and similar activities.

 

Terminal Objectives:

At the completion of this course, students should expect to:

  1. Employ human relation principles in order to encourage more favorable behavior and performance from workers.

  2. Compare and contrast differing theories of interpersonal perception and impression formation.

  3. Analyze motivation level of workers using a variety of models.

  4. Analyze interpersonal and group conflict and utilize appropriate strategies for its resolution.

  5. Understand models of personality, attitudes, values and ethics in interpersonal relations.

  6. Understand the nature of leadership and use leadership styles appropriate to the situations.

  7. Understand the nature of stress and how to use stress management techniques.

  8. Understand models of communication that can lead to improved listening skills and appropriate responses styles.

Student Withdrawal Policy:

Students who wish to withdraw from this course must do so by Friday of Week #11.

  

Course Evaluation:

Midterm, Term Paper, Homework, and Final Exam—each weighted at 25% of Final Grade.

 

 Student Responsibilities:

Students are required to attend all classes.  Group discussion is an integral part of this course; students will be asked to contribute and ask questions. 

 30% Absence: DeVry’s Attendance Policy allows a Professor to withdraw a student from a course when a student has been absent 30% of the class hours of the course.  If I drop you from the class, you must then appeal to me to be reinstated.  If you are not reinstated, this can affect your eligibility for financial aid and will result in a “W” grade for the course.  (Don’t forget to use the automated attendance system, ATS, starting 10 minutes before the hour and closing 20 minutes after the hour.)

 Late assignments will be accepted with a one grade level reduction.
