Why are We in Such a Mess?
And the Answer is....

And the answer is that we elected Trump. It wasn’t a deus ex machina happening. In the first election, Clinton got 4 million more votes than Trump. Nonetheless, presidential elections in America aren’t based on the majority of votes cast. The Electoral College determines the president. It doesn’t make sense; nonetheless, it is the law. In the second election, which Trump claims was a mandate, he won by 1.5% more votes than Harris received.

That still doesn’t explain why, in a month, Trump will create even more of a mess than he did before. Trump faced two impeachments. The first was on February 5, 2020, and it went nowhere. The Senate had their second chance to vote to impeach him on February 13, 2021.

Trump’s demand that Raffensperger would find 11,780 votes fell on deaf ears...fortunately.

We wouldn’t be facing these troubling times had some Republication Senators stood and spoken the truth to corrupt power. Alas, they didn’t, and we are facing far more chaotic times.

The second impeachment vote

The second impeachment vote

This time, the vote was 57-43, which fell short of 67 senators. The Senate voted 57-43 to convict Trump of inciting an insurrection at the Capitol. While the Democrats had to get 17 Republican senators to reach the threshold of 67 senators, only six Republicans stood up to Trump: Sens. Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Burr, Sasse, and Toomey.

Interestingly, Shakespeare wrote:

Cowards die many times before their deaths;
The valiant never taste of death but once.
Of all the wonders that I yet have heard,
It seems to me most strange that men should fear;
Seeing that death, a necessary end,
Will come when it will come.

So, due to the cowards within the Senate, we are facing an emboldened Trump. Trump will try to quench his thirst for more Narcissus waters. Whether in Congress or individually, each of us faces a Kierkegaardian either/or dilemma. Either we stand up and face Trump down, or we acquiesce to a “very stable genius.”

We are in the midst of writing our history. How will history remember us? Randy Pausch warned us in The Last Lecture, “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” Choose wisely.
