MICHELE BACHMANN
An Eschatological Expert

There are very few men to the left of me on most social issues including sexism. In my various humanity classes that I teach, my students hear me vent on sexism. We, as a human race, have been sexist long before recorded time. We need to do something about that along with racism and homophobia to mention a couple other oversights that we have as people. However, women cannot simply wait around until men address sexism. Women need to demand equality in all aspects of their lives. If they wait for men to give them equality, they will be waiting another 200k years – if they are lucky.

Michele Bachmann Michele Bachmann
Having said that, I will do my part addressing sexism. Men need to wake up and so do women. Michele Bachmann has done more to perpetrate sexism in America in the 21st century than many sexist men have done. Bachmann talks about things with the gusto of a true believer, but it is hot air nonsense. She rattles her base but does nothing to better America or the world. In that process, she reinforces the notion held by many males that they are intellectually superior to females.

In addition to Bachmann's nonsense about political issues in America, she also addresses the apocalypse...the end times. She is not an authority on much, but she thinks that she is in tune with the divine timetable for the eschatological event. Here are some snippets of Bachmann's analysis of the Second Coming. You will note that she uses the phrase: Maranatha Come Lord Jesus, which is grammatical redundancy. Maranatha is actually two Aramaic words, maranâ thâ', which can be found in the NT twice and means something like "Our Lord has come." Therefore, Bachmann is merely repeating essentially the same statement in two language in a single sentence. It makes about the same sense as saying in German, "Guten nacht good night" or saying in Chinese, "Nǐ hǎo hello."

This happened and as of today the United States is willingly, knowingly, intentionally sending arms to terrorists, now what this says to me, I'm a believer in Jesus Christ, as I look at the End Times scripture, this says to me that the leaf is on the fig tree and we are to understand the signs of the times, which is your ministry, we are to understand where we are in God's end times history...

Rather than seeing this as a negative, we need to rejoice, Maranatha Come Lord Jesus, His day is at hand...

When we see up is down and right is called wrong, when this is happening, we were told this; these days would be as the days of Noah.

Bill Maher railed at Bachmann's eschatological nonsense, as she was ranting over her concerns about the US budget for next year. Maher said, "If you think the world is about to end, that's your right, but you don't get to vote on next year's budget because it doesn't concern you."

Bachmann, who spends much of her time dissing Obama, feels that Obama is funding al-Qaida in Syria that shows that he is playing into God's plan for the end time. Al-Qaida and bin Laden were the ones behind 9/11. Therefore, Bush/Cheney were also playing into God's hands for not being more vigilant.

Even though Bachmann's thinks that she knows the eschatological plan of God, she does not know any of the eschatological history of Christianity. I know that she is not going to read this essay but others will.

The early church believed that the end time or when Christ would return was to be soon after the resurrection. It would certainly occur prior to any of the deaths of the early Christians. When some Christians died due to Roman persecution in Thessalonica, it created a very significant problem for the early church. However, had Bachmann been there at that time, she would have been delighted. She would have said, "Maranatha Come Lord Jesus" as if she know anything about which she spoke.

Even though Bachmann's Bible contains Matthew 24:36, apparently she has not read the following, "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only." IMHO, Bachmann is not a heavenly angel. Nevertheless, even if she were, she would not know.

Bachmann does not read Luke either. Had she, she would have read Luke 21:29-33.

Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

In either gospel case, Bachmann would have said, "Maranatha Come Lord Jesus" as if she know anything about which she spoke.

Then the church continued speculating upon the Second Coming. Some thought that it would occur at the end of the first millennium. Again, had Bachmann been there in 1000 AD, she would have said, "Maranatha Come Lord Jesus."

There have been other predictions as with the Shakers in 1757. I cannot be sure, but I think that is Bachmann in front of this photo. It looks like she is saying, "Maranatha Come Lord Jesus."

Not even a century later, William Miller also predicted the Second coming in 1843. However, in the following year he wrote the Great Disappointment. A friend of Miller wrote, "Our fondest hopes and expectations were blasted, and such a spirit of weeping came over us as I never experienced before... We wept, and wept, till the day dawn." If she had been with Miller prior to the Great Disappointment, she would have uttered, "Maranatha Come Lord Jesus."

After two millennia of hopes shattered by disappointment, Bachmann is spouting, "Maranatha Come Lord Jesus," to which Edvard Munch would scream, "Maranatha Lord, save us."

I emailed this article about Michele Bachmann to China Dostal, my web administrator, on the same day that I heard Jerome McDonnell's Worldview in which he interviewed Frank Schaeffer. The interview essentially dealt with much of what I was addressing in the Bachmann article. I listen to Worldview all the time and have been interview by Jerome twice. This is an important interview to which to listen as are all of his interviews.
