Ship of Fools
Both Then and Now

This essay is about the present day ship of fools. However, we need to learn from the past—from the other Ship of Fools. Karl Marx said, “History repeats itself, the first as tragedy, then as farce.” To backup Marx, George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” In the mid-60s, the movie, Ship of Fools, was released.

Ship of Fools

The movie was about generally a motley group of passengers on a German passenger liner in 1933. It left Veracruz, Mexico destined for Bremerhaven, Germany with stops in Cuba and at another island in the Canary Island, Tenerife, before reaching Germany. While the passengers had all sorts of issues like racism, drug addiction, and other medical problems, some of them attempted to do their best dealing with their lives on their four week voyage. In the movie version, they all disembarked. Most of them left their ship of fools in Bremerhaven in Nazi Germany. Although, one of them left in a coffin.

Disembarkation in Bremerhaven, Germany

That was the backstory then; now, this is about the present day ship of fools. The captain of this ship is Captain Donald the Dumb, and as with the other ship, many of his crew are generally motley, although there are a few honest passengers. Nonetheless, most of the honest ones have already jumped ship.

Those who are still onboard know that they are there to do the bidding of their captain. Some of the crew on the ship of fools roster are Rudy Giuliani, who is the president’s attorney masquerading as someone from the State Department. William Barr is the Attorney General and also the president’s attorney. Mike Pence, the Vice-President, is the captain’s robot and smiles while he parrots the captain’s orders for the day. When Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State, is found sitting around on one of the ship’s deck chairs, he is denying listening in on the captain’s ship-to-shore conversations. Nonetheless, after a week, he admitted that he did listen in on the conversation. Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s senators, is also his medical advisor. He is sure that the captain is like a “normal person.”

As the ship sails on, one would think that the remaining passengers would be looking for a lifeboat or at least a life preserver. It won’t be long before they will all hear the sound of the whistle as the whistleblower sounds an alarm, “ABANDON SHIP!”

However, one of the passengers on the ship of fools, Tucker Carlson, realizes that the ship is in danger of sinking. He wrote, “Some Republicans are trying, but there’s no way to spin this as a good idea…Like a lot of things (Captain) Trump does, it was pretty over-the-top…Once those in control of our government use it to advance their political goals, we become just another of the world’s many corrupt countries. America is better than that.”

Regardless, the ship of fools will be like another ship all too soon.
